Mulan premiered to predominantly positive reviews, and 10 minutes in, as the story gets rolling, it’s easy to understand why a visually stunning production, an all-star cast of contemporary Chinese actors, and entertaining story-telling in a Disney sort of way (except for some slightly labored tutorials in Chinese culture that make for a bit of clumsy dialogue). But mostly, it left us wanting to see it on a big, big screen, and wishing it was longer. For our family, a night out to the theater would cost about the same, and considering we have gone nowhere for months, surviving on just YouTube and Korean soap operas, we went for it.įilmed as big-budget epic, we expected it to be a less absorbing experience on a 13” MBP screen, and that is certainly the case, but does the story and acting hold-up on the small screen? Yes, but like most “Epics” the flaws also come into sharper focus than they would in an immersive theater experience.
